South Korean international midfielder Lee Jae-sung, 31, Mainz, found the back of the net in a preseason match to help his team to a convincing win. The midfielder has raised expectations for his third season with Mainz.
Lee started and scored his second goal of the season in Mainz’s 4-1 preseason win over St. Gallen (Switzerland) in Schlattming, Austria, on Sunday (Sept. 2).
In the 22nd minute with his team up 1-0. Lee calmly finished a low cross from the left flank with his right foot for the breakaway goal. It was his first goal of the preseason, raising expectations for the season.
Once touted as the “next Park Ji-Sung” for his work rate and attack-minded moves, Lee broke out last year in his second season with Mainz. In 34 league games, he scored seven goals and provided four assists, ranking third on the team in goals and first in assists. 스포츠토토
The Bundesliga’s secretariat recognized his performance by placing him on the shortlist of 15 candidates for Midfielder of the Year.
The cherry on top came in February. After the World Cup break in Qatar, Lee had a stellar month.
He started all four Bundesliga games in that span and was in peak form, scoring three goals and providing two assists. He was nominated for the February Player of the Month award alongside Alfonso Davies (Bayern Munich) and Julian Brandt (Borussia Dortmund).
At the end of the season, he was ranked as the seventh best attacking midfielder by a leading German publication.
On March 22, German publication Kicker named the best players in each position last season, with a total of 12 players in the attacking midfield category. The publication ranked Gaejoong Lee Jae-sung as the seventh best player in the position.
