It’s time to root for Colombia.
The South Korea women’s national soccer team (ranked 17th in FIFA), coached by Colleen Bell, lost 0-2 to Morocco (ranked 72nd in FIFA) in their second Group H match at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia-New Zealand 2023 at Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide, Australia, at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday. With the loss, South Korea faces elimination.
South Korea started in a 3-5-2 formation. Park Eun-sun and Son Hwa-yeon started up top, with Jang Seul-ki and Chu Hyo-joo on the flanks. The midfield consisted of Cho So-hyun, Ji So-hyun, and Lee Keum-min. The back three was Hong Hye-ji, Shim Seo-yeon, and Kim Hye-ri. Kim Jung-mi was in goal.
Morocco countered with a 4-4-1-1 formation. Zaidi, Amani, Tangnout, Chebak, Nakachi, Dickie, El Chad, Benzina, El Haji, and Ermich started.
The Africans were just as scary. In the sixth minute, El Haji received a pass from the flank and calmly took his chance. A cross into the box was delivered sharply. Jaidi, who was quick on his feet, slid in a header that rattled the net. South Korea faced an unexpected twist, conceding a goal and losing the lead just six minutes after kickoff.
The reins were pulled. Park Eun-sun held up in the center, Jang Seul-ki and Choo Hyo-joo on the flanks and Cho So-hyun and Ji So-yeon in the middle had chances, but they couldn’t create anything threatening. The same was true for substitutes Moon Mi-ra, Choi Yoo-ri, Jeon Eun-ha, Casey Fair, and Chun Ga-ram.
In the end, South Korea fell to Morocco and suffered back-to-back defeats. They are the only team in Group H with zero points (2 losses, 0 goals scored, 3 goals conceded). They are virtually guaranteed to be eliminated from the group. 꽁머니지급
Of course, there is a chance. It all depends on the outcome of the match between Germany (ranked #2 in FIFA) and Colombia (ranked #25 in FIFA) at 6:30pm at Allianz Stadium in Sydney, Australia.
If Germany wins or draws against Colombia, all bets are off. Colombia must beat Germany to advance to the final. The problem is that the results of the third round matches between South Korea and Germany and Colombia and Morocco also take goal differential and goal difference into account, so ‘-3’ South Korea will have to somehow beat Germany. It’s a brutally unlikely scenario that needs to happen to punch their ticket to the round of 16.
